OBITUARY OF ARTHUR BENJAMIN "BEN" TURNER

LANDRUM--November 2, 1944--One man died en route to a Tryon, N.C. hospital and two others are seriously injured tonight as a result of an automobile accident on state highway No. 176 just inside the city limits of Landrum township according to county police officers who investigated.

Listed as dead was Ben Turner, Landrum water commissioner. Injured were Carl Barnett, water commissioner, and Allen Harris, plwnber. The injured men were taken to a Tryon hospital.

Nk. Barnett received chest injuries and scratches and bruises. Mr. Harris suffered a broken leg and head injuries.

A 193 5 Ford automobile traveling south from Tryon, N.C., hit the three 0 men when it met another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, investigating officers reported.

They stated that the Landrum men on the side of the highway were worldng on a city water line valve when they were struck.

The driver of the car is being held for investigation. An inquest will be held later.

Investigating officers were Rural Police Jim McAbee, Marion Lancaster, Ace Cannon, and Dick Southers as the chief of police of Landnnn.

Tonight no fimeral arrangements had been made for Mr. Turner.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Carruth Turner; five sons, Harold of Landrum, Chaplain Boyd Turner in the Pacific, Lieut. Wallace Turner in New Guinea, Cpl. James Turner of Camp Brecidnridge, Ky., and Allen Turner who has a New York APO address; one daughter, Mss Helen Turner, teacher in the Marion, N.C. schools; one brother, John of Im-nan; and three sisters, Mrs. Jane Odom of Hendersonville, N.C. and Mrs. Cleve Mary) Wofford and Mrs. Elford (Harriett) Carnith of Landnun.

LANDRUM--November 4, 1944--Ben Turner, Landnun water comn-dssioner,
injured in an automobile accident, died Thursday night en route to a hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m., at the Fairview Baptist Church of which he as a deacon, conducted by the Revs. T.E. Reid, J.B. Neil, and James A. Howard. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be C.Y. Camith, Jr.; Jim Camith; Jack Turner; Homer Bradey; and Carl West.

The deacons of the church together with the following men are to fonn an honorary escort: B.F. Thomson, J.G. Landnun, Homer Howard, Edward Waldrop, C.M. Littlefield, B.F. and Hoyt 0. Prince, Dr. A.R. Walden, and John Atidns.

The body will be at the home until the hour of service.
The Petty Funeral Home of Landnun is in charge of arrangements.
