OBITUARY FOR CLARENCE LEE BARNETT, SR
Jasper, TN - Service for Clarence Lee “Red” Barnett, Sr. a prominent educator and former Marion County superintendent of schools, were to be hel today at 2 pm CDT at Rogers Funeral Home here, with the Rev. Jack Herron officiating.

Burial was toe be at Pone Grove Cemetary.

Mr. Barnett, a resident of Japer, daid Sunday in a South Pittsburg, TN hospital. He was 84.

He was a native of South Carolina, but moved to Marion County in 1923 and taught school, later becoming superintendent of schools. He also taught for 17 years at Chattanooga Valley High School.

A gifted preacher, Mr. Barnett turned down contracts with major league baseball teams when he was in college, lontime friend Charlie Coppinger recalls. “(Hall of Famer) Red Ruffing pitcher of the New York Yankees and he was that type of a pitcher,” Mr. Coppinger recalls. “I’ve seen him just mow’em down.”

Mr. Coppinger, whose brothers played semi-pro ball with Mr. Barnett, says, “I feel certin that he could have been in with some of the greates in America, but hewas a Baptist minister and wouldn’t play on Sunday.

Mr. Barnett attended Mars Hill College, Carson-Newman College, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee Knoxville, University of Tennesse Chattanooga and Georgia Tech.

Mr. Barnett, an independent Baptist minister, was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Jasper, the Masons, and the Chattanooga Scotish Rite Bodies.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Abbie Mae Lewis Barnett and a son Jackie Barnett.

Surviving includes three daughters, Reba Lou Tankersley, Mableton, GA, Kay Parkerson, Brentwood, TN, Patsy Ruth Osborne, Huston, TN; four sons, Lance Barnett, Kenny Barnett and C.L. Barnett, Jr, all of Jasper, Paul Barnett of Chattanooga; a brother Leroy Barnett, Greenville, TN; sister, Mabel B. Levi, Tuxedo, NC; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the ronald McDonald House in Chattanooga.
