He was pastor of Fairview Baptist Church in Landrum, SC in 1886 when a scandal occured at the chruch. The Association withfrew from the church and it disbanded. Rev. Barton continued preach there for about a year. In 1888 the church reorganized ad it was again admitted to the Association.
