Notes for James Nelson BROWN
Dr. Howard mentions James “Jim” Brown on p. 38 of his book; he says that Jim lived about half the distance between Ebenezer-Welcome and Glassy Mountain churches, about two miles. Dr. Howard further says that Jim served both churches as Sunday School Superintendent; he walked or rode a horse each Sunday morning to Ebenezer-Welcome, where he served for 30 years. He served the Glassy Mountain Church in the afternoons for many years. James died on January 26, 1941 and was buried in Ebenezer Welcome cemetery. Hattie died on March (or May) 1, 1979, while a resident of Landrum, at Grady Hipp Nursing Center, in Greenville, after a long illness. She was also buried in Ebenezer Welcome cemetery. (It is believed that James “Jim” Brown had a brother, Isom Brown, who served as a magistrate for a few months in 1923; it may be that he is the one who remodelled the Tinsley house near Liberty Methodist Church.)2
